Pfizer, the world's leading pharmaceutical company, today announced a global partnership to provide access to and research in-house and external development of generic versions of its hair loss medication Finasteride.
The global partnership, led by Pfizer, will enable Pfizer and its shareholders to access generic versions of the medication in their respective countries, and to obtain access to a branded version of Finasteride from external companies. Pfizer will be able to fund research and development for generic versions of Finasteride at a scale to the current global supply of Finasteride in the United States, and at a much smaller scale in Europe and Japan.
The global agreement will support Pfizer and its shareholders to access generic Finasteride from external companies and to obtain a branded version of the medication at a much lower cost to the global market. Pfizer will also provide Pfizer with access to a number of external companies through its subsidiary, Propecia, which manufactures and markets Finasteride, in addition to its global headquarters in Israel and New Zealand.
“The global partnership marks a significant milestone in Pfizer's commitment to provide access to generic versions of Finasteride. This agreement provides Pfizer and its shareholders with access to Finasteride, and provides Pfizer with a global portfolio of generic and branded products in the United States and Europe. Pfizer is committed to achieving a sustainable supply chain for its products worldwide,” said Pfizer CEO Ian Read. “Our collaboration with Pfizer will enable Pfizer to develop and commercialize a generic version of Finasteride, which will allow Pfizer to continue to deliver its important medical treatment for hair loss, and will enable Pfizer to continue to manufacture and market Finasteride in the United States and Europe, as well as in other countries.”
Finasteride, the first of its kind, is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp. The medication has been available since 1997 and is the only one of its kind that contains 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. In Europe, it is available through pharmacies and distributors.
Finasteride is indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men. In a recent study of hair loss patients, the average duration of hair loss after one year was reported to range from a few months to several years. It has been shown that the medication works by preventing hair loss in men, but it does not treat pattern hair loss.
Finasteride has been the world's leading choice for the treatment of male pattern hair loss and is also one of the leading treatments in the treatment of enlarged prostate glands, or enlarged prostates.
In addition to the U. S., Canada and Japan, Pfizer is also collaborating with the international pharmaceutical company Teva, which provides Finasteride in Europe. Pfizer's current patent on Finasteride in the United States is valid until the expiration of the Pfizer patent in 2012, and Teva has exclusive rights in the branded version of the medication.
Under the agreement, Pfizer will be able to fund research and development for generic Finasteride from external companies, and at a much smaller scale in Europe and Japan. Pfizer will also be able to fund research and development for generic versions of Finasteride at a scale to the current global supply of Finasteride.
“We are excited to be involved in the global partnership and are looking forward to a future where we can provide access to our customers and partners the medicines they need in order to treat their hair loss,” said John T. Kennedy, Chairman, CEO, and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer. “This is the first global collaboration to support generic Finasteride, and we will continue to support our shareholders and our shareholders will be able to access the medicines that they need in-house to treat hair loss. The partnership will allow Pfizer to continue to market its medicines to the global market, and to enable Pfizer to continue to manufacture and market Finasteride in our countries. Pfizer is committed to providing access to generic Finasteride for customers in its global portfolio of products in the United States, and in Europe and Japan.

— --Finasteride is a medication that's been on the market since 1997 and was first used by men to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. But the Food and Drug Administration recently approved a different formulation of the drug called finasteride 1 mg/ml in men. The FDA doesn't approve finasteride, but a new study says that a new formulation of finasteride in the market may improve sexual function and lead to a better quality of life for the millions of men taking it.
Finasteride, marketed as Propecia by Merck & Co. in the United States, is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It was first approved in 1997 by the FDA to treat male pattern baldness. Since then, its benefits have expanded to other areas of hair loss. Finasteride was approved to treat enlarged prostate problems, such as and prostate cancer. Other potential side effects include, but are not limited to, nausea, and diarrhea.
The study, which was published in the journalArchives of Internal Medicine, looked at 8,000 men who took finasteride daily for up to one year and compared the results to an open-label study on male volunteers. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, which is often used in clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of medications for medical conditions.
"Finasteride is an effective treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with BPH, but it is not for use in women with BPH," says Dr. Robert A. Gershan, professor of medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Richmond. "This study is an important study to help the FDA approve the new formulation."
Gershan and his colleagues analyzed data from the new study, which was published in thein late February, and found that finasteride improved the quality of life for patients with BPH. For the study, men with BPH received a prescription medication known as Propecia, which is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. Men who took the drug had significantly more hair growth, but had a slightly lower risk of prostate cancer. The study also found that finasteride improved erectile function and quality of life in men with BPH.
"Patients who were taking finasteride reported better erectile function and sexual function, but there was no difference in other outcomes between the finasteride and placebo groups," Gershan says. "There was a significant difference in hair growth and a slightly lower risk of prostate cancer."
Finasteride is an oral drug that has been approved by the FDA to treat male pattern baldness, but the drug is not approved for use in women with BPH. The medication is available as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Men taking the medication had a significantly lower risk of prostate cancer than those who did not take the medication.
The researchers used the data from the new study to evaluate whether finasteride improved the quality of life for men with BPH. The study was conducted in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
"The results from the new study show that finasteride is an effective treatment for BPH in men with mild to moderate BPH," Gershan says. "It may be used as a second-line treatment or a first-line treatment for women with BPH."
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It's a 1-alpha reductase inhibitor that's also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. The FDA doesn't approve this drug because it has not been approved by the FDA to treat BPH. However, some studies have shown that finasteride works well in treating androgenic alopecia. Gershan and his colleagues have previously described the drug as a "reTablettent" drug. They also noted that finasteride is a "nonbenign" drug that can cause a serious skin condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). A NAION is an eye problem that occurs when the optic nerve of the eye develops a permanent damage to it. Finasteride can cause a permanent loss of blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye when taken by a woman who is taking medication to treat BPH.
Other potential side effects of finasteride include, but are not limited to, nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and ejaculation problems. In the study, men who took finasteride reported fewer side effects than men who took a placebo.

Propecia Finasteride 1 mg is a medication used to treat male pattern hair loss in men. It works by reducing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) the hormone that causes hair loss and may help with hair loss problems that are not due to gland-related factors.
Propecia is a prescription medicine that is used to treat male pattern hair loss in men. It is a popular and effective treatment for hair loss in men. Propecia is available by manufacturer’s manufactured substance. It is a type of drug called a generic drug. Propecia is available by prescription. It works by reducing the conversion of testosterone to the active ingredient dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the active ingredient, which causes hair loss and may help with hair loss problems. DHT is a hormone linked to hair loss and prostate growth. It is primarily responsible for shrinking the prostate gland and has been shown to impact male sexual function and reproductive health. DHT is produced by the male prostate gland and secretes nutrients for it to grow and help conceive. The goal of Propecia is to reduce the amount of male hormone the prostate gland is incapable of producing. The drug prevents the production of DHT by the prostate gland, reducing the amount of this hormone and preventing the growth of an enlarged prostate.
